Read on for Darnell’s story…
I didn’t know Darnell personally but know many people who did. Unfortunately, Darnell’s long battle with cancer ended this past Friday at the young age of 37, leaving behind a loving family and many great friends. I found out on one of my Jeep forums and followed various links to continue reading his full story. Darnell was active in the Air Force for nearly 20 years and according to VisualIntel.net, was at one point a kennel master overseas – incorporating his avid love of dogs into his career. He was active on various Jeep forums and managed to get in the occasional Meet & Greet or wheeling trip where he made many great Jeeping friends. When he posted about his condition on the Military Jeepers forum in July of ‘09, word quickly spread to various other forums, and wishful thoughts and prayers came in in high volume. The Jeeping community that knew and loved him so much was also able to help raise some money to help him and his family out in their time of need. In late February, he returned home after a strong fight in the hospital, had a formal retirement ceremony, and even posted a few times on his forums before dying in the arms of his wife early Friday morning.
Darnell’s story stuck with me. Even though I hadn’t met him, seeing so many people coming together to help, reading old forum posts, and hearing happy stories from many great friends, I felt like he was a friend of mine as well. So I’ve decided to honor him by making his Jeep my very first Jeep of the Month. He’s gone on to the big offroad park in the sky – where nothing ever breaks and the trails never end. He will be missed by all.
RIP Darnell
